Baldwin symbolises jazz as a two-edged sword fashioning a him capable of expressing emotions like nought else, but in addition presenting the danger of the lifestyle it promotes. Throug hout the story, the reader follows Sonnys past and present brushes with evil, his triumphs, and his defeats. In Sonnys Blues, Baldwin uses metaphorical references, to centre on the perpetual war between good and evil. Baldwin emphasizes the deftness at which Harlem residents fall to the bring out of evil.
